Ingredients

  • Ground beef
  • Texas toast
  • Onion
  • Green bell pepper
  • Tomato sauce
  • Ketchup
  • Brown sugar
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Mustard
  • Salt and pepper

Instructions

Step 1: Toast the Bread

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F. Lay your Texas toast slices on a baking sheet. Toast until golden brown about 5 minutes per side.

Step 2: Cook the Beef

  • In a hot skillet, brown the ground beef over medium high heat. Stir occasionally to break it up. Once browned, drain excess fat.

Step 3: Add the Flavor Base

  • Throw in your onions and bell pepper. Cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.

Step 4: Build the Sauce

  • Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard. Lower the heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes.

Step 5: Assemble the Sloppy Joes

  • Place toasted Texas toast slices on a plate. Spoon a generous amount of beef mixture over each.

Step 6: Optional – Melt the Cheese

  • Pop them back in the oven with shredded cheese on top until it melts beautifully.
